Cyclone Dana Gaining Strength In Sea, Moving Towards Odisha Coast

Bhubaneswar: Cyclone Dana, gaining strength in the sea, is now moving slowly towards the Odisha coast. While it was moving at a speed of 3 kmph at around 11.30 pm on Tuesday, it is now gradually slowing down, hinting that its impact is likely to be more intense. Currently, it is lying 650 km from Paradip.

However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is yet reveal where the Cyclone Dana will make landfall, but satellite pictures show that it is likely to make landfall anywhere in Bhadrak and Balasore districts. Under its impact, heavy rain and wind are expected in these two districts.

According to the latest information, the deep depression has already taken the form of a cyclone and it is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over the central Bay of Bengal by Thursday. The eye of the storm is visible in the satellite images as the east-central Bay of Bengal is becoming more and more turbulent.

It will move along the north Odisha and West Bengal coasts and make landfall between the Thursday night and Friday morning. The wind speed will be 100 to 110 kmph during this time, while the maximum speed may be 120 kmph.

Similarly, the IMD has predicted that the wind speed will be 100-110 kmph in Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore; 80-90 kmph in Mayurbhanj; 60-80 kmph in Puri and 60-70 kmph in Cuttack, Jajpur, Khurda, Bhubaneswar, Dhenkanal and Keonjhar. Similarly, the wind speed in Sundargarh can reach 50-60 kmph and 40-50 kmph in Angul, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Boudh, Sambalpur and Deogarh districts.

Due to the influence of Cyclone Dana, there will be rain in several districts of Odisha from Wednesday. Heavy rainfall is likely in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, and Puri districts after Wednesday evening. Similarly, heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Mayurbhanj, Cuttack, Jajpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts on Thursday. In view of this, a red alert has been issued for these districts.

The IMD has issued an orange alert for the above districts, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nabarangpur, Khurda, Puri, and Ganjam. Apart from this, a yellow alert has been issued for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, and Kandhamal districts. On the other hand, danger signal number 1 has been issued for all ports in the state.
