Cyclone ‘Dana’ Located 150km Southeast Of Paradip, Moving With 10 Kmph Speed; Extremely Heavy Rain Expected

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted extremely heavy rainfall in several districts of Odisha for two days starting today as the severe cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ is approaching the coast.

The weather agency informed that scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (>20cm) rainfalls are very likely to occur in Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Balasore, and Mayurbhanj on October 24.

Similar weather condition will be felt in Jajpur, Bhadrak, Puri, Dhenkanal, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada and Angul districts on October 25.

The severe cyclonic storm “DANA” over northwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph which is about 150 km southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 180 km south-southeast of Dhamara (Odisha) and 250 km south of Sagar Island (West Bengal).

It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island close to Bhitarkanika and Dhamara (Odisha) during mid-night of 24th to morning of 25th October, 2024 as a severe Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting 120 kmph.

Fishing operations have been completely suspended on October 24 and 25 over Central and North Bay of Bengal.

Great danger signal no-10 (GD-10) has been hoisted at Puri, Dhamara/ Chandbali, Paradip while local cautionary signal no.3 (LC-3) at Gopalpur port.

Storm surge is likely to be 1.0 to 2.0 m height above astronomical tide and very likely to inundate low-lying areas of Kendrapara, Bhadrak & Balasore districts of Odisha during the time of landfall.

Storm surge of 0.5 to 1.0 m height above astronomical tide is very likely to inundate low-lying areas of Jagatsingpur district during the time of landfall.
