Bhubaneswar: Cyclone Dana has taken a severe form and is heading towards land from the sea, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday morning, adding that it may recurve slightly after landfall.
Cyclone Dana will make landfall between Bhitarkanika and Dhamra in Odisha between Thursday night and Friday early morning but its track may recurve slightly after landfall, Regional Meteorological Department Director Manorma Mohanty said on Thursday.
Talking to the media, she said that severe cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ is currently 210 km southeast of Paradip and 290 km south-southeast of Dhamra, 350 km south-southeast of Sagar Island. It is currently moving northwest. For the past 6 hours, the storm has been moving north-northwest at a speed of 15 km per hour.
She said that while the path of the storm is the same, Cyclone Dana may slightly recurve to the west-west-southwest.
It is estimated that the wind speed in Balasore, Bhadrak and Kendrapara districts at the time of landfall may be 100 to 120 km per hour. Along with this, high tides are expected in the sea and the storm is expected to bring down trees, electric poles and thatched houses. Due to this, there will be heavy rainfall in various places for the next two days.
Heavy rainfall will occur in Mayurbhanj, Kendrapara, Balasore, Bhadrak Jajpur, Cuttack districts for the next 24 hours. A red alert has been issued for all these districts. An orange alert has been issued for Puri, Khurdha, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, and Keonjhar districts. A yellow alert has been issued for Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur districts.
A red alert has been issued for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Bhadrak Balasore for tomorrow, while an orange alert has been issued for Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, and Angul districts. A yellow alert has been issued for Puri, Khurdha, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Nayagarh and Boudh districts. A yellow alert has been issued for Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Rayagada and Nabarangpur districts for Saturday.
