Bhubaneswar: With landfall process of extremely severe Cyclone FANI beginning from 8 am onwards in Puri, the wind speed picked up pace and became ferocious in capital city Bhubaneswar too. With speeds reaching up to 100 kmph, several trees uprooted, blocked roads and kept people stranded.
As soon as aftermath of the cyclone came into view of the administration, work began in full swing. With help of Odisha Fire Services, Public Works Department and ODRAF teams, road clearance work was taken up at MLA Colony, Satya Nagar, PWD Colony and Kharavel Nagar. It is notable to mention here that an old lady was rescued after uprooted trees were cleared from the road in front of her asbestos house. 5 HP pump was also installed in Paika Nagar sub-lane to pump out water and avoid water-logging in the smart city.
As informed earlier, the city’s urban pockets have been divided into 13 sectors in which an OAS officer will take the role of the sector officer with an engineer (Civil) and another from drainage. The sectoral officer will take call on emergency situations arising out of `FANI’ and recommend appropriate actions as per the requirement at Ground zero. The affected roads would be cleared with sufficient deployment of people/workers under the supervision of a nodal officer.
There will also be a drainage engineer who, in consultation with the team will decide on the positioning of the pumps and low-lying areas. The sectors are Infocity, Xavier, Vani Vihar, Kuakhai, Khandagiri, ISKCON area, OUAT, Airport, Smart District Area, Sachivalaya Marg, Cuttack Road, Kalpana and Lingaraj area.
Around 50 pump sets, with operators and sufficient fuel, have already been installed in 40 locations and all measures to clear drain blockages have also been adopted. Equipments for road clearance including cutters and JCB have also been made available in the 13 sectors.
