Bhubaneswar: While earlier prediction of cyclonic storm FANI to make landfall near Udayagiri of Krushnaprasad block of Puri district on May 3 had panicked residents of the area, the early action by Odisha administration had been appreciated by them.
After the forecast by Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) at 8:00 pm on Tuesday, the administration had been placed of very high alert focusing on evacuation of people from the vulnerable areas on war-footing basis.
It is notable to mention here that Naveen Patnaik was constantly monitoring the situation. Several preparedness meetings had been chaired by him in the State Secretariat stressing on importance of ‘zero-casualty’. All the officers were also kept on their toes to carry out evacuation and awareness programs.
A resident of Udayagiri, Purna Chandra Dalei, said after watching television news about the approaching cyclone on May 30 the people in the area were living in fear. Later in the morning, officials from district administration and Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) reached the village and evacuated the people to nearby cyclone shelter.
Dalei informed that the administration also took responsibility of providing food for the people and also prepared to relocate the people to another place if any problem occurs. He also thanked the Odisha Government and administration for their pro-activeness.
Another resident of the village, Satyabadi Biswal, said that the district administration and OSDMA have arranged for cooked and dry food and ensured to provide further help. It is a welcome step by the administration, he added.
