Bhubaneswar: An intense cyclone forming in the Bay of Bengal may impact Odisha between May 23 and 27, predicted Mumbai Nowcast on Sunday.
“Cyclone Alert: Intense cyclone is expected in the Bay of Bengal by 23rd May which is likely to impact Odisha, Maharashtra, and Gujarat between May 23 and 27. Models predicting heavy rains for Gujarat and Mumbai around 28 May,” Mumbai Nowcast wrote on its X handle today.
According to the weather office, the cyclone is currently intensifying and is expected to make landfall on the eastern coast before moving westward, impacting a wide area of the country. The regional center of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar, however, has not made any announcement on the cyclone yet.
IMD Bhubaneswar center director Manorama Mohanty said a low-pressure area is likely to be formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal around May 22 and it is likely to move initially north-eastwards and concentrate into a depression over central parts of the Bay of Bengal around May 24, 2024.
“The IMD has not issued any alert regarding the cyclone. After the formation of a low-pressure area, the picture will be clear. People should not get panic from today,” Mohanty said.
