Cyclone Jawad To Severely Impact These Odisha Districts

Bhubaneswar: The Cyclonic Storm ‘JAWAD’ is likely to trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall that may result in flooding of roads, waterlogging, landslides, and damages to houses and property in 13 districts of Odisha.

The districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, and Mayurbhanj are to bear the brunt of the cyclone.

Impact in the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada and Cuttack

i) Some damages to thatched houses/ huts and vulnerable structures.
ii) Breaking of tree branches, uprooting of small trees.
iii) Localized Flooding of roads, inundation, and waterlogging in low-lying
areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas of the affected region.
iv) Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall.
v) Disruption of traffic in major cities due to waterlogging in roads leading to increased travel time.
vi) Localized Landslides/Mudslides in hilly areas
vii) Damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation.

Impact in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, and Mayurbhanj

i) Breaking of tree branches
ii) Localized Flooding of roads, inundation, and waterlogging in low-lying areas, and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas of the affected region.
iii) Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall.
iv) Disruption of traffic in major cities due to waterlogging in roads leading to increased travel time.
v) Damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation.

As predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), under the influence of the Cyclonic Storm, heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places with extremely heavy falls at one or places (more than 20 cm) over the districts of Ganjam, Puri, and Jagatsinghpur today.

Besides, heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak Kendrapada, Cuttack, Khordha, Nayagarh, Gajapati, and Jajpur; and heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Kandhamal, Rayagada, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.

On Sunday, heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack, and Puri.

Similarly, heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over the
districts of Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Khordha, and Ganjam

The IMD further informed that the Cyclonic Storm ‘JAWAD’ over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards with a speed of 6 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centered at 0830 hrs IST of today, the 04th December 2021, over westcentral Bay of Bengal, about 210 km east-southeast of Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 320 km south of Gopalpur (Odisha), 390 km south-southwest of Puri (Odisha) and 470 km south-southwest of Paradip (Odisha).

It is likely to move nearly northwards, weaken gradually during next 12 hours and then move north-northeastwards along Odisha coast reaching near Puri around 5th December noon as a Deep Depression. Subsequently, it is likely to weaken further and continue to move north-northeastwards along Odisha coast towards West Bengal coast.
