Bhubaneswar: A depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal has moved west-northwestwards at a speed of 8 kmph in the past 6 hours.
As of 11:30 PM on October 25, 2025, the system is centered near latitude 11.0°N and longitude 87.7°E, approximately 550 km west of Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Islands), 850 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 890 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 890 km southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), and 970 km south-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha).
The India Meteorological Department has forecast that the depression is likely to intensify into a deep depression by October 26 and a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by October 27 morning. The system is expected to further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28 morning.
The cyclone, named ‘Montha’, is predicted to move north-northwestwards and cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, during the evening/night of October 28. The severe cyclonic storm is expected to bring strong winds with a maximum sustained speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.
The forecast has prompted authorities to issue alerts and advisories for the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Residents are advised to stay tuned for further updates and follow evacuation instructions from local authorities.
