Cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’: Orange Warning For Heavy Rainfall Issued For Odisha Coasts

Bhubaneswar: The cyclonic storm “Michaung” over southwest Bay of Bengal has moved north-north-westwards with a speed of 0230 hours IST on Monday over latitude 13.0°N and longitude 81.4°E Chennai, 220 km southeast of Nellore. It is likely to continue to move north- Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu in the forenoon. Thereafter, it would move nearly northwards almost parallel to Andhra Pradesh coast and cross south Andhra Pradesh in the forenoon of Tuesday as a severe storm with wind speed of 100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.

The cyclonic storm is likely to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatna in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday forenoon.

Forecast & warning for next five days as follows:

Day-1: (Valid up to 0830 Hrs IST of 04.12.23)

Light to moderate rain/ thundershower is very likely in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, and Gajapti, while dry weather is very likely to prevail over the rest districts of Odisha.

Day-2: (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 04.12.2023 to 0830 Hrs IST of 05.12.2023)

Light to moderate rain/ thundershower is very likely in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapti, Ganjam, Puri and over the districts of Jagatsinghpur, and Cuttack.

A yellow warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam.

Day-3: (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 05.12.2023 to 0830 Hrs IST of 06.12.2023)

Light to moderate rain/ thundershower is very likely in the districts of south coastal Odisha, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur Odisha, north coastal Odisha and at a few places over the remaining districts of Odisha.

An orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam. A yellow alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Puri.

Day-4: (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 06.12.2023 to 0830 Hrs IST of 07.12.2023)

Light to moderate rain/ thundershower is very likely districts of coastal Odisha, Mayurbhanj, Angul, and Dhenkanal. A yellow warning for heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) has been issued for one or two places over the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Nayagarh, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri and Rayagada.

Day-5: (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 07.12.2023 to 0830 Hrs IST of 08.12.2023)

Light to moderate rain/ thundershower is very likely to occur at a few places over several districts of Odisha.
