Dangerous Trend: 3 Suicide Attempts Before Odisha Assembly In Last One Week

Bhubaneswar: It all seems that taking undue advantage of the democratic tool of right to protest against alleged injustice meted out and also in order to draw the attention of the State Government straight at the heart of capital city, a dangerous trend of attempting suicide, especially self-immolation bid, before the State’s citadel of democracy (Assembly) has been witnessed in the last one week here.

Besides, the protestors are perhaps well aware of both 24×7 electronic media and social media coverage for which they seemed to have opted for such a tactical act of hogging the limelight for redressal.

It all started with an aggrieved couple from Nayagarh district who alleged that their 5-year-old daughter was kidnapped and murdered, but justice still eludes them as the accused have allegedly been enjoying political patronage for which the case has got allegedly hushed up by the local police.

This issue has now gained political heat and the ongoing Winter Session of Odisha Legislative Assembly is in turmoil since then as the opposition members have been stalling the proceedings with repeated pandemonium and adjournment of the House. They have been demanding the resignation of Nayagarh MLA-cum-Higher Education Minister Arun Sahoo.

The issue also assumed utmost importance when the State Government immediately ordered for a probe by the Crime Branch. Even the Chief Minister yesterday welcomed the opposition’s demand and further ordered for the probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Yesterday, three farmers from Athagarh areas also made the same suicide attempt before the Assembly demanding justice to them in the loan fraud committed in their local cooperative bank.
Last but not the least, today too witnessed yet another suicide attempt by an agitated mother and her son from Jagatsinghpur district’s Kujang area. They also allege that justice has been denied to them by the local police and other higher-ups.

Even though all these three sucide attempt cases have successfully been foiled by the police personnel deployed before the Assembly, such a trend in row does not augur well as it not only puts a big question mark on the police intelligence and robust security arrangement, but also points finger at the law and order situation in the State.

It all seems that the complainants have switched over to an easy-go-lucky-way means of protest even amid the pandemic protocols instead of the previous Gandhian way. May be somewhere chinks in the armoury reflect and mock at.
