Bhubaneswar: Devotees were barred from darshan at Shree Jagannath Temple for over an hour on Saturday evening due to the Bada Maha Snana ritual, a purification ceremony performed to restore the temple’s sanctity.
A devotee vomited near Bhitara Katha, prompting the ritual as per tradition. The ceremony involves pouring water on mirrors placed before the deities, not bathing the idols themselves.
The ritual is performed in cases of impurity, such as vomiting, blood stains, animal death, or human death inside the temple. Darshan resumed after the ceremony.
