**Baripada**: A dawn to dusk bandh called by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) against brown sugar trade has crippled life in Baripada. The bandh is in protest against the rampant smuggling and sale of brown sugar in the town, coupled with the police and excise department’s inefficiency to control it.
The party activists were seen in hundreds blocking the roads and railway tracks disrupting the vehicular movement and train services to a grinding halt. Shops, commercial establishments, and educational institutions downed their shutters as the protesters picketed to enforce the bandh.
The JMM activists demanded an assurance from the officials that proper steps would be taken to make Baripada town free from brown sugar traders clutches. They have even threatened that they would intensify the agitation if the local administration and the State Government fail to take any proactive measures to deal with the stigma.
According to sources, tight security arrangements have been made to prevent any untoward incident during this period and many prominent JMM leaders have been taken into custody as a preventive measure.
