Rayagada: A daring daylight robbery in Rayagada town has once again raised concerns over rising crime, after miscreants allegedly broke open a scooter’s storage compartment and decamped with gold ornaments weighing around 10 tola, valued at approximately ₹15 lakh.
According to police sources, gold merchant Santosh Mahapatra had parked his scooter in the premises of a hotel located in Swagat Lane and gone inside for lunch. During this time, two unidentified miscreants entered the parking area, broke open the scooter’s dickey, and fled with the gold ornaments.
Following the incident, Mahapatra lodged a complaint at the Town Police Station. Police personnel promptly reached the spot and initiated an investigation. CCTV footage from cameras installed outside the hotel is being examined to identify the accused.
Mahapatra, a resident of Therubali under Chandili Police Station limits, reportedly procures gold on credit from local shops in Rayagada and sells it in nearby areas.
Police officials, including Additional IIC Ajit Kumar Parida, have begun a detailed probe into the case.
