Dead Body Detained Over Unpaid Bills, Odisha Health Minister Orders Probe

Bhubaneswar: Following allegations against Bhubaneswar-based Kalinga Hospital for detaining a dead body over unpaid bills and misbehaving BJP MLA Mohan Charan Majhi, Health Minister Naba Kishore Das on Saturday ordered to form a 4-member committee to probe the incident and submit report within seven days.

Reportedly, a youth identified as Sachin, son of Basudeb Barik from Naradpur village under Jhumpura block of Keonjhar district, had died while undergoing treatment at the hospital. Though Basudeb had paid the medical bills, the hospital had detained Sachin’s body demanding more money.

After Basudeb explained his ordeal to Keonjhar MLA Majhi, he requested the DGM of Kalinga Hospital to release the body. However, the DGM and accounts staff of the hospital not only insulted the legislator but also denied to release the body until the money is deposited.

Following it Majhi apprised the situation to Health Minister Das, who took the matter seriously and directed Commissioner-cum-Secretary Pramod Kumar Meherda to form a 4-member committee to probe the incident.

Based on it, Meherda has formed a committee headed by Joint Secretary Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar who will be assisted by Joint Secretary Subhananda Mohapatra. The other members of the committee are deputy secretaries Rajesh Agarwal and Jamini Patnaik.
