Bhubaneswar: A depression formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Sri Lanka coast has intensified into a deep depression. The system is expected to intensify further into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The system is currently centred near the southeast coast of Sri Lanka. It is likely to move north-northwestwards, potentially impacting northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh within the next 48 hours.
As per IMD’s morning bulletin, the system was located near latitude 6.3°N and longitude 82.4°E, about 150 km east-northeast of Hambantota and 190 km east-southeast of Batticaloa in Sri Lanka. It is likely to continue tracking north-northwest across the Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka while gaining strength.
Under its influence, Tamil Nadu experienced heavy rainfall, with isolated areas receiving 7-10 cm of rain.
The IMD has warned of heavy rainfall and strong winds in the affected regions.
