Bhubaneswar/ New Delhi: A New Delhi court on Saturday convicted Al-Qaeda Indian Sub-continent (AQIS) operative Mohammed Abdur Rehman, who was arrested by a joint team of Delhi and Odisha Police in 2015.
While convicting Abdul Rehman, Delhi Patiala House Court has reserved the quantum of punishment for February 14.
Four others have also been held guilty of a terror link. Special judge Sanjay Khanagwal convicted Maulana Mohd Abdur Rehman Kasmi, Mohd Asif, Zafar Masood and Abdul Sami, saying the prosecution was able to prove its charges against them under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The judge, meanwhile, acquitted two suspected AQIS operatives Syed Mohd Zishan Ali and Sabeel Ahmed in the case.
Rehman was held by Delhi Police after tracking his phone calls to Paschimgachha village near Tangi in Cuttack. He was running a madrasa at Tangi in Cuttack district, where most of his students are said to be from Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.
During the investigation, he admitted his link with the 1999 Kandahar plane hijack and the 2002 American Centre blast incident in Kolkata.
He had provided a safe shelter to a Pakistani terrorist involved in the plane hijack. He had kept them in a secret location in the Cuttack district.
