Bhubaneswar: The well-marked low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of coastal Odisha, north coastal Andhra Pradesh & westcentral Bay of Bengal moved slowly west-northwestward, concentrated into a Depression and lay centered at 0830 hours IST of today, the 9th August, 2022 over coastal Odisha and neighbourhood near latitude 20.8oN and longitude 85.6oE about 70 km north-northwest of Bhubaneswar (Odisha), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
It is likely to move west-northwestwards, maintain its intensity today and weaken gradually into a well-marked low pressure area over Chhattisgarh and neighbourhood by tomorrow, the IMD added.
Under the impact of the system, heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at a few places (7 to 20cm) with extremely heavy rainfall (>20cm) at isolated places over the districts of Bargarh, Sambalpur, Angul and Keonjhar, during the next 24 hours.
The IMD has issued a ‘red’ alert for the aforementioned districts.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Sonepur, Bolangir, Boudh, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Nawarangpur, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur, during the same period.
The IMD has issued an ‘orange’ alert for the aforementioned districts.
The weather agency has warned heavy to very heavy rainfall may trigger landslides/mudslides in vulnerable hilly areas.
Temporary water logging in low lying areas, occasional reduction of visibility causing traffic congestion in urban areas and some damages to Kutcha roads and vulnerable Kutcha houses, it added.
Further, under the influence of Depression over coastal Odisha & neighbourhood, Squally weather with surface wind speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is very likely over along and off Odisha coast and Northwest adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal till 11th August, 2022.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea along and off Odisha coast and Northwest adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal till 11th August, 2022.
