Berhampur: The schedule for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Berhampur on September 27 has been finalized, with top-level reviews of security and administrative arrangements already underway. Minister of Steel and Mines Bibhuti Bhusan Jena and Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania visited Berhampur today to oversee preparations and hold detailed discussions with local officials.
The DGP, who arrived this morning at the Rangeilunda airstrip—where the Prime Minister is slated to land—assessed security measures in anticipation of the large public meeting scheduled nearby. With an estimated turnout of over one lakh people, he stressed the need for robust security deployment, smooth traffic management, and adequate parking arrangements. Instructions were also issued to thoroughly inspect hotels and lodges in Berhampur to rule out potential security threats.
Later in the day, Minister Jena and DGP Khurania visited MKCG Hospital in Berhampur to meet injured SOG jawan Prem Singh Majhi, who was seriously wounded during a recent anti-Maoist operation in Kandhamal’s Raikia block. The DGP lauded Majhi’s courage, spoke with doctors about his treatment, and assured the jawan’s family of full support, describing his contribution to anti-Maoist efforts as “unparalleled.”
As part of his visit, DGP Khurania also chaired law-and-order review meetings at the Berhampur district police headquarters and the Ganjam SP office. He examined crime control measures, discussed strategies to tackle cannabis cultivation and smuggling, and urged officials to prepare a special blueprint to curb narcotics trafficking. The DGP called upon police officers to strive towards making Ganjam and Berhampur districts crime-free.
Key senior officers, including Additional DGP (Law and Order) Sanjay Kumar, IG (Southern Range) Niti Sekhar, SP Ganjam Shubhendu Kumar Patra, and SP Berhampur Sravana Vivek M, were present during the high-level review.
