Bhubaneswar: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has sought the intervention of his colleague Union Minister of Tourism & Culture G Kishan Reddy to declare Kapileswar Temple on the city outskirts as a protected structure by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
“…I request you to consider my request and take necessary action at the earliest and ensure Kapileswar Temple is notified as a protected structure by ASI. Kapileswar Temple is not only a religious site but also a national treasure that deserves our respect and care,” wrote Pradhan in a letter addressed to the Union Minister of Tourism & Culture.
Pradhan drew the attention of Reddy towards the preservation and development of Kapileswar Temple, a 7th century shrine located on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, one of the oldest and most revered temples of Odisha.
The Union Education Minister Pradhan stated in the letter that Kapileswar Temple is believed to have been built in the 7th century CE by the Somavamsi dynasty.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is famous for its beautiful architecture, sculptures, and paintings. It is also a popular pilgrimage site for devotees who flock to the temple during Shivaratri and other festivals, the Union Minister Pradhan added.
However, the temple is facing serious threats from urbanization, pollution, and neglect. The temple complex is surrounded by encroachments, garbage dumps, and sewage outlets. The temple structure is deteriorating due to lack of maintenance and conservation. The temple art and heritage are fading away due to vandalism and weathering. The temple atmosphere is losing its sanctity and serenity due to noise and disturbance, Pradhan pointed out.
“I request you to kindly intervene in this matter and urge the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to adopt Kapileswar Temple under its protection and development scheme. ASI is the premier organization in India for the preservation and promotion of our cultural heritage. ASI has the expertise, resources, and authority to restore and enhance the glory of Kapileswar Temple. ASI can also help in creating awareness and appreciation among the public for this ancient and sacred monument,” Pradhan said.
