Dhenkanal Forest Sleuths Rescue Rare Species Turtle, One Arrested

Dhenkanal: The officials of this Forest Division today rescued a rare species of turtle from the Sadangi Range area and one person has been arrested for possessing it ulawfully packed in a well-stitched sack. It was found hidden in his backyard.

The arrested person has been identified as Bhramarabar Tarai of Talakasipur village. He was forwarded to court.
The rescued turtle is an endangered species for which it was later freed into the Brahmani river here.

In his media reactions, Dhenkanal DFO Prakash Chandra Gogineni stated, “We received information and acted accordingly. Our forest division hosts six species of fresh water turtles in river Brahmani. Today we rescued an Indian narrow-headed softshell turtle (biologically known Chitra Indica). It’s an IUCN redlist-endangered species under the Wildlife Protection Act-Schedule. It weighed 30 kg. We have released it to the Brahmani river. One person has been arrested.”
