Dhenkanal Forest Squad Busts Pangolin Smuggling Gang; 2 Nabbed, 2 Fleeing

Dhenkanal: The forest sleuths have been successful in busting a pangolin smuggling gang by arresting two accused while two others managed to escape.

As per reports, the 18-member forest team of Dhenkanal Forest Division apprehended two pangolin smugglers from Shankarpur road in adjacent Cuttack district last evening.

The two arrested persons have been identified as Ghanashyam Behera of Gadahaladia Medical Sahi in Khurda district and Jitendra Pradhan of Badatola village under Jatani Police Station (PS) limits.

A pangolin has also been seized from their possession.

Notably, Dhenkanal DFO Prakash Chandra Gogineni has been monitoring the special team pressed into action following information that pangolins are being smuggled from the Kapilas Reserve Forest.

In his media reactions, the DFO said, “Ten days ago we received information that pangolin is being poached in Kapilas area. Besides our informer’s input, a viral video was also seen by us. It depicted that a person is trying to sell a live pangolin.”

He further stated, “Basing on the evidence, we began our investigation since last one week. We could also identify the suspect. Also, we chased them for 24 hours. We were successful yesterday when the suspects were transporting the pangolin towards Khurda. Our three teams intercepted them. A live pangolin was recovered and two accused were arrested while two others could manage to escape.”

He added, “Interrogation revealed that they hail from Khurda area. Whatever data we have procured from their cell phones indicates that these two have also hidden pangolins at different places. As the case is complex by nature, we have planned to hand the case over to the Crime Branch through our PCCF. We’ll also involve our other divisions and pursue our further investigation.”
