**Cuttack**: It seems they have sold their degrees and thrown the healthcare ethics to the drain as a doctor couple – Surendranath Senapati and his wife Diptirani Samanta of Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre (AHRCC) here – was arrested on charges of prescribing low-quality medicines manufactured by a non-reputed company on Friday.
Surendranath Senapati was the former HoD of Medical Oncology Department at AHRCC.
According to reports, the State Vigilance sleuths also arrested Sudhansu Das, owner of JSBL Chemicals and Pharmaceutical which was manufacturing and supplying medicines.
The doctor couple was sent to Choudwar Jail after the Special Vigilance Court has deferred the hearing on their bail plea for tomorrow.
It is learnt that the medicine company sends some doctors on foreign trips and the arrested doctor couple had also availed the offer.
Besides, the anti-corruption agency has also questioned two more persons in this connection.
Notably, the raids were conducted at six places, including the house of the doctor couple at CDA area here, on the allegation of acquisition and possession of disproportionate assets.
The raids were conducted following an allegation of irregularities in medicine procurement at the hospital.
The movable and immovable assets identified during the raids included 12 plots in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Pune in the name of both, 1250 grams gold and diamond jewellery, Rs 14.42 lakh cash, deposits of Rs 34.51 lakh, Rs 23,59,000 share bonds and Rs 9,80000 fixed deposits in various bank accounts, Vigilance sources said.
