Bhubaneswar: In a groundbreaking medical feat, doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar have accomplished a remarkable success by removing India’s largest kidney mass, weighing an astonishing 8.7 kilograms.
The patient, a 50-year-old man from Nayagarh district in Odisha, was suffering from Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD), a genetic condition that led to the development of massive cysts in his kidney.
The patient had been experiencing severe abdominal pain and discomfort due to the enormous size of the cystic kidney, which significantly impacted his quality of life. After a thorough evaluation, a team of skilled doctors at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, led by Dr Manoj Kumar Das, Associate Professor of Urology, decided to undertake the high-risk surgery to remove the massive kidney mass.
The complex five-hour surgery was a testament to the expertise and teamwork of the medical team. Dr Das was assisted by Dr Sambit Tripathy, Assistant Professor, and a team of resident doctors, including Dr Saharsh, Dr Mithlesh, Dr Huzaifa, Dr Sabique, and Dr Sachin. The surgical team received crucial support from an experienced anaesthesia team headed by Dr Pooja Bihani, along with contributions from resident doctors and operation theatre (OT) staff, including nurses Ms Shreya and Ms Parineeta.
According to Dr Das, “This was not just a medical success but a story of trust and teamwork.” He expressed his gratitude to the patient and his family for placing their confidence in the team. Dr. Das also acknowledged the support and encouragement received from AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s Executive Director, Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, and Dr. Prasant Nayak, Head of the Urology Department.
Medical experts note that kidney masses of such enormous size are extremely rare and pose significant surgical challenges due to their complexity and potential complications. The successful removal of this massive kidney mass marks a record-setting event in the medical field and highlights the advanced surgical capabilities of AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
Currently, the patient is stable and recovering well under the close monitoring of the medical team.
