Double-Decker Elevated Road Planned For Jayadev Vihar-Nandankanan Route

Bhubaneswar:  In a significant move to address the escalating traffic congestion in Bhubaneswar, Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan announced today that an elevated corridor will be constructed on the Jayadev Vihar-Nandankanan Road.

The ambitious project, estimated to cost around Rs 2,700 crore, is designed to enhance connectivity and streamline transportation in the capital city.

The proposed corridor will span from Jayadev Vihar Square to Nandankanan and will seamlessly integrate with the existing Jayadev Vihar flyover. The innovative double-decker design will feature a four-lane road for vehicles on the first level, while the second level will be reserved for the upcoming metro project. This dual-purpose infrastructure aims to optimize space and improve traffic flow.

Minister Harichandan revealed that the construction is slated to commence by the end of April, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) currently in progress to finalize the design and execution plan. The elevated road will stand approximately 8 meters (26.24 feet) above the ground, with the metro track positioned at a height of 14 meters (46 feet).

To ensure smooth transitions for vehicles, escapeways will be strategically placed at key junctions, allowing easy movement between the service road and the flyover. The project is expected to be completed by 2027-28, offering a long-term solution to the city’s traffic challenges.

The decision to construct an elevated corridor comes as a sustainable alternative to expanding the existing road at ground level, which would have necessitated the relocation of numerous residents and the felling of thousands of trees. By opting for an elevated structure, the government aims to minimize disruptions and preserve the city’s green cover.

This project marks a significant step forward in Bhubaneswar’s urban development, promising to transform the city’s transportation landscape and improve the quality of life for its residents.
