Dowry Death: Two Women Killed In Separate Incidents In Odisha

Nuapada/Dhenkanal: Two women died in mysterious circumstances in two separate incidents. While one case was reported from Nuapada district, the other was reported from Dhenkanal district.

The police have registered separate cases of unnatural death against the in-laws of the dead women in the two incidents. The initial enquiry in both the incidents indicate that the women were allegedly killed for the sake of dowry, the police said.

In the first case of Nuapada, the victim Laxmi Chinda (20) had married Bhala Chinda (25) about a year ago at Colony Sahi under Rasol police limits in Hindol. Over the year Bhala had been repeatedly torturing Laxmi and pressurizing her to get extra gold and a motorcycle as dowry. Complying with Bhala’s demands, Laxmi’s parents sent a motorcycle with her on January 16.

However, today her parents were informed that she was suffering from a fever and was admitted to a hospital. By the time they reached Laxmi had already passed away. Bhala and his family buried Laxmi’s mortal remains.

Laxmi’s body was exhumed based on her parents’ FIR and in the presence of Police and medical officials. She was cremated post autopsy.

In Dhenkanal, newly married Arati Sahoo (17) was allegedly killed by her husband Sujit Sahoo (22) for failing to bring enough dowries at Kotagaon village under Boden police limits. Sujit with help of his mother Kumudini Sahoo first killed Arati and then packed her body in a sack and threw it off deep inside forest near Dandiri village.

Based on a complaint by Arati’s family, Boden police interrogated Sujit and Kumudini. They also found the mortal remains of Arati and sent it for autopsy.
