Bhubaneswar: The state-level Martyrdom Day of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was observed with solemnity and grandeur at Jayadev Bhawan today. The event was organized by the Department of Information and Public Relations, Government of Odisha.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, he called upon the youth to draw inspiration from the ideals and life of Dr. Mukherjee, describing his legacy as a “gift to the nation” and a source of enduring guidance for generations.
The Chief Minister highlighted Dr. Mukherjee’s resolute stance on national unity, particularly in relation to Jammu and Kashmir. He recalled Dr. Mukherjee’s firm belief that Kashmir is an inseparable part of India and does not require any special constitutional provisions. “This belief reflected his deep patriotism,” said Majhi.
He further stated that the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35(A) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the first year of his second term was a historic move that aligned with Dr. Mukherjee’s vision.
“This bold decision stands as the greatest tribute to Dr. Mukherjee’s life and mission,” he remarked. “The name of Jammu and Kashmir will always be incomplete without remembering Dr. Mukherjee and our Prime Minister.”
Majhi also pointed out that previous governments had not formally observed Dr. Mukherjee’s Martyrdom Day in Odisha. “Our government considers this a national duty and will continue to honor his sacrifice,” he affirmed.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to youth empowerment, noting that a series of youth development programs are currently underway across the state as part of the government’s first anniversary celebrations. “As we build a new Odisha and progress towards a stronger India, Dr. Mukherjee’s vision continues to guide us,” the Chief Minister added.
Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj also spoke on the occasion, describing Dr. Mukherjee as a guiding force for India’s youth. He likened his life to a meteor—brief yet impactful—leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s history.
Among the dignitaries present were Babu Singh, MLA from Ekamra Bhubaneswar; Ashok Mohanty, MLA from Pallahara; and keynote speaker Professor Basanta Kumar Panda.
The welcome address was delivered by Sanjay Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary, Department of Information and Public Relations. Anuj Kumar Das Pattnaik, Director of the Department, delivered the vote of thanks.
