**Chhatisgarh**: A video has emerged in which light assistant of the camera team named Mormukt Sharma, deployed by the Doordarshan News to cover election in Chhattisgarh, has displayed his emotions during the cross-firing between the Naxals and the police personnel.
He is seen to be on a selfie mode in a trench, reporting from the line of fire.
“We had come for election coverage in Dantewada and got stuck in a terrorist attack now. We were moving towards our destination with a small platoon of army personnel when the Naxals surrounded and attacked us,” he says in the video.
As he speaks, we can hear gunshots in the background.
In a message specifically for his mother, the light assistant said, “It will be a big thing if I managed to return home alive. But I want to say that I love you very much, mummy. It is possible that I die in this attack. The situation is very tense over here. But I am not feeling frightened though death is so near. It is very difficult to survive in this condition as the naxals have surrounded our team from all sides.”
But luck was on his side and he managed to survive along with his team member Dheeraj Kumar (reporter) and rescued by the CRPF team which reached the spot after a span of 45 minutes. Till then, cameraperson Achyuta Nanda Sahu and two police personnel identified as Mangal Ram and Rudra Pratap Singh were slain.
The whole operation continued for around three and half hours. Both the media crew, in the trench, waited for the green signal to come out in the open.
In another video, it is seen how one of them asks for water while waiting for the operation to be over. But the CRPF jawan asks him to lie in the trench till everything is over.
Talking to OMMCOM NEWS, DD reporter Dheeraj Kumar said, “Our cameraperson was in the front of the team as we wanted to project ourselves as media persons and he had a camera with him. There were a few police personnel for our security. But the attack was so sudden, and a bullet straightaway struck Sahu ji killing him on the spot. It is only after 3.5 hours that we got rescued.”
Notably, DD News had deployed a camera team for election coverage in in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district, which is set to go for polling in the first phase of Assembly elections in the state on November 12.. The team included cameraman Achyutananda Sahu, reporter Dhiraj Kumar and light assistant Mormukt Sharma. The team came under attack by Maoists yesterday forenoon near Dantewada.
