Bhubaneswar: The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has achieved a significant milestone with the successful completion of three consecutive flight-trials of the Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS). The tests were conducted from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha, targeting high-speed, low-altitude aerial threats.
During the trials, the VSHORADS missiles demonstrated exceptional precision by intercepting and completely destroying targets designed to mimic low-flying drones with reduced thermal signatures.
The tests were conducted under various operational conditions, showcasing the system’s adaptability and reliability. The final deployment configuration involved two field operators who executed weapon readiness, target acquisition, and missile firing, simulating real-world combat scenarios.
Advanced range instruments, including Telemetry, Electro-Optical Tracking Systems, and Radar, captured comprehensive flight data. These confirmed the system’s pinpoint accuracy and its unique capability to neutralize drones and other aerial threats effectively. Senior officials from DRDO, the Armed Forces, and industry partners witnessed the trials, marking a collaborative effort in advancing India’s defence capabilities.
VSHORADS, a Man-Portable Air Defence System, has been indigenously designed and developed by Research Center Imarat in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and production partners. The system is tailored to meet the operational requirements of all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces—the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh lauded the achievement, congratulating DRDO, the Armed Forces, and industry partners for the successful tests, calling it a “great success.” Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, also extended his congratulations to the entire team and stakeholders involved in the project.
The successful trials underscore India’s growing self-reliance in defence technology and its commitment to strengthening national security with cutting-edge indigenous solutions.
