Dreaded Maoist Leader Dubasi Shankar Arrested In Koraput

Bhubaneswar: In a major success for Odisha police, dreaded Maoist leader Dubasi Shankar alias Mahendra was arrested from Baipariguda in Koraput district on Tuesday. There was an award of Rs 20 lakh on Shankar’s head announced by the Odisha Government.

“Mahendra was allegedly involved in the attack on CISF personnel at Damanjodi in 2009. Nine CISF personnel were killed in this incident. He was also involved in 2010 Govindpali landmine blast in which 11 Odisha police personnel were killed. Besides, this man was involved in Janiguda ambush in which 3 senior BSF officials were killed,” DGP Abhay said.

He was booked in a case by Baipariguda police and was forwarded to the court today. It was a major success for the DVF of Koraput police, SOG and the BSF. An INSAS rifle, ammunition and mobile phones have been seized from his possession.

In retaliation, the associates of Shankar fired at our forces today afternoon. In this exchange of fire there has been no injuries on our side. However, the area will be assessed for injured or casualties of the Maoists who have fled leaving behind arms and ammunition, said Abhay.

Shankar was a senior leader of the Andhra Odisha Zonal Committee of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) and also headed their military committee. He is the highest ranking official of the Maoists arrested or killed by the forces in the last 20 years, the DGP added.

In another development, an area commander of the Maoists, Sonal Madvi alias Kiran surrendered before DIG and SP, Koraput on Tuesday.
