Bhubaneswar: Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Sunil Bansal warned of stern action as per law against those taking law into their own hands.
“Despite the State government giving written assurance yesterday to consider their demands with sympathy within three months, there is no justification for drivers sitting on dharna on highways and indulging in protests in some places. It is illegal,” said the DGP addressing a presser jointly with the Chief Secretary here today.
Bansal pointed out that drivers continuing with their agitation in some places after the government’s assurance also have no moral ground now.
He appealed to them to desist from the agitational path.
He said that yesterday in one or two places some people attacked the police and took law into their own hands.
“Some criminal or anti-social elements have infiltrated into the agitation and are trying to defame the drivers. So we were forced to take legal action. We have information that in some places dharnas, etc have been withdrawn but in some places, if they are still picketing we will be forced to take stern action as per law.
The reason being no one will be allowed to take law into his own hands,” the DGP cautioned.
Under no circumstances law and order in the state will be allowed to be compromised, he added.
“This is causing inconvenience to the public at large. I again appeal to them to come to the negotiating table, the government is always prepared for a detailed discussion as announced by the Chief Secretary. Otherwise, we will be forced to take action as is provided under the law,” said Bansal.
