Drowning Cases On Rise In Puri Sea ‘Bathing Zone’, ‘Rescuer’ Jetski In Damaged Condition After 10 Days Of Induction

**Puri:** In an unfortunate incident, one young boy of Jharkhand named Ankit Gupta hailing from Hatia near Ranchi got drowned while taking bath in the ‘bathing zone’ of the Puri Sea. He had come to the pilgrim city along with eight of his friends.

The family members of the deceased rushed to Puri from Jharkhand when they heard of the catastrophe befallen on the family.

According to his brother-in-law, “All eight of us were taking bath in the sea when suddenly we noticed that Ankit was missing. I cried out for help. Some lifeguards went into the sea with tube, but were not able to trace him. It was only today that we were able to get his body.”

Ironically, he was taking bath in the safest zone defined as bathing zone by the district administration. In the current year of 2017, eight presons are reported drowning in this zone.

To add to the woes, the jetski worth Rs 18 lakh which was inducted by the Odisha Fire Department on September 14 for the rescue of such drowning persons is now in a broken and damaged condition.

When enquired about it, Bichitra Kumar Panda, Deputy Fire Officer, Puri said, “A defect was noticed in the jetski ten days after its induction. We informed the company in Mumbai, and the mechanics had come to check it. We are in constant touch with them as some spare parts needed in the jetski were to be procured by them. We are trying to get it fixed as soon as possible.”
