Drunk Driver Arrested In Cuttack After New MV Act Implementation

Cuttack: In a first, a drunk driver was arrested here after implementation of the New Motor Vehicles Act (2019). Cutting no slack, the Commisenerate Police made the arrest on late Friday night.

During a regular patrolling at Nuabazar under Chauliaganj Police limits, ASI AK Swain intercepted a biker Rakesh Panda (on motorcycle OR 05 2839) who was way beyond the permissible speed limit. Upon checking by use of breath analyzer, he was detected with 45 mg of alcohol with respect to 100 mg breath. The biker was immediately arrested by ASI Swain and is being prosecuted vide MV Non FIR no 21/19 u/s 185/202 of MV Act.

Panda, who hails from Matgajpur in Kandarpur, will be forwarded to court today.

The Commisenerate Police tweeted saying, “Please be aware, driving after taking alcohol will not be tolerated. Be safe, don't drink & drive.”

The New Motor Vehicles Act (2019) was implemented pan-India from September 1. As per the new Act, drunken driving may cost Rs 10,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 6 months to 1 year for first offence and Rs 15,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 2 years for subsequent offence.
