E-Detection System For Motor Vehicle Insurance Compliance From Feb 1

Bhubaneswar: The E-Detection system will begin from Saturday (February 1) at all 22 toll gates across Odisha to monitor motor vehicle insurance compliance.

The system will automatically detect vehicles without valid insurance and issue an e-challan. This move aims to ensure that all vehicles plying on Odisha’s roads have valid insurance, thereby reducing the risk of accidents and providing compensation to families of victims.

As per Section 146 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, every motor vehicle must have valid insurance. Violators will face penalties under Section 196, including a fine of ₹2,000 or imprisonment for up to three months, or both. Repeat offenders will be fined ₹4,000 or imprisoned for up to three months, or both.

The State Transport Authority (STA), Odisha, has completed all necessary preparations to implement this system. The E-Detection system was previously used to track violations related to permits, fitness certificates, and tax compliance. With the addition of insurance violations, the system will further enhance road safety in the state.

The Odisha government’s decision to use E-Detection to identify violators is a significant step towards reducing the number of uninsured vehicles on the road. This move is expected to provide relief to families of road accident victims who were previously denied compensation due to the absence of valid insurance.
