Bhubaneswar: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) will be investigating the possible money laundering and money trail aspects in the 2.729 kg brown sugar seizure case of Nilagiri in Balasore district, sources said.
This will be for the first-time that ED will be investigating a drug trafficking case in Odisha.
The Special Task Force (STF) of the Crime Branch of the Odisha Police on March 18 this year had seized 2.729 kg of brown sugar estimated to be worth about Rs 2.7 crore from Nilagiri area of Balasore district.
The STF apart from seizing the brown sugar had arrested two persons Lokanath Behera and Pradip Kumar Das.
According to an official, the duo used to get the drug from neighbouring West Bengal and supplied the same to peddlers across the State.
The ED suspects it to be a case of money laundering and hence wants to investigate the money trail, the official added.
