Berhampur: In a shocking incident, unidentified people have allegedly murdered an elderly man over suspicion of practising sorcery before burying him in B.Nuapalli village in Bania panchayat under Khallikote police limits in Ganjam district.
Police have detained four persons in this connection and are interrogating them.
The deceased has been identified as Judisthir Pradhan of B.Nuapalli village.
According to reports, Khallikote police officials, Khallikote Tahsildar and the scientific team have rushed to the spot to conduct an investigation into the barbaric incident.
Efforts are underway by the police to exhume Judisthir’s body in presence of the aforementioned officials.
Reportedly, on Sunday Judisthir had left his home in B.Nuapalli at around 8.00 AM on his bicycle to get photostat copies of some important documents.
As Judisthir did not return home after a reasonable period of time, his family thought that he could have visited his daughter’s house which was nearby.
However, as the old man did not return home by the evening, distraught family members called up his daughter over the phone only to know that Judisthir hadn’t visited her place.
After frantically searching for Judisthir, his family members found his chappals, clothes, and the documents he had carried to get photocopied, all lying scattered at the foot of a hill at the end of their village. The old man’s bicycle was also found by them lying at a distance.
Later, they discovered a place atop the hill to have been dug out and then filled up.
Judhistir’s family suspect that a relative of the former who suspected him to be practising witchcraft and had threatened to kill him could have killed the old man before burying him on the hill.
Following a complaint by Judisthir’s family at the Khallikote police station in this regard Khallikote IIC Jagannath Mallick, Chhatrapur SDPO Goutam Kisan and other senior police officials have reached the spot and examining the circumstances while preparations are underway to exhume the body, at the time of filing of this report.
Meanwhile, police have detained four members of the family of Judisthir’s relative for questioning, who had allegedly threatened to kill the old man.
