Jajpur: A widowed old woman, Satyabhama Swain has proved herself as an example for the people of Odisha. Her dedication and comittment to farming and earning her living, at a ripe age is heartwarming.
Swain, a native of Pratamakhanda village in Rasulpur block of Jajpur district, is 75 years old. From the last 30 years she has been staying in a small hut, but has been very enterprising.
The woman has adopted farming as her passion and is committed to the cause. She grows a variety of vegetables and fruits in her own field and sells them in the nearby Barabati market.
The elderly woman earns well from the sale to support her family. She has ensured higher education for two of her sons. However, she advises them to undertake farm as their profession and dream big, instead of going abroad.
Swain has been awarded many times as a leading and successful woman farmer by various social organizations at the district level. Today she has become an example not just for Jajpur district, but for the entire state, the locals said.
The villagers said that if the woman gets some assistance from the Government, she can do wonders by increasing production in a large scale. She can also be an employer if her farming activities expand further, they opined.
