Eldest Daughter Shoulders Father’s Mortal Remains, Lights Funeral Pyre

Malkangiri: Amid the age-old tradition granting exclusive social right to the eldest son or any son of a conservative Hindu family to perform the last rites of one’s parents, this was proved to be a misnomer by a daughter when she volunteered to not only turn the pallbearer of her departed father, but also perform the pious ‘mukhagni’ (lighting the funeral pyre).

Even though this incident took the onlookers aback, all were heard showering praises on such a responsible and dutiful daughter.

Sanjukta, the eldest daughter of late Satya Narayan Nayak (55), has now shot to limelight in the district here.

Satya Narayan, who was an auto-rickshaw driver by profession and died yesterday in a road accident, is now survived with his wife and four daughters. He has no son.

Despite being deprived of a son, the father used to feel himself very lucky being blessed with four daughters who are indeed no less than a son, the denizens here opine.
