Bhubaneswar: An elephant calf which was separated from the herd has been kept in a temporary shelter at Talcher Range beat house in Angul district.
The forest department is treating the calf which is showing signs of weakness. Special veterinary doctors are engaged in the treatment of the calf.
The forest department made all efforts to help the calf join the herd, but to no avail. The forest official tried to reunite the calf with its mother and herd on Thursday evening. But, the calf was abandoned by the herd.
Forest officials said one more attempt will be made for the reunion after the treatment of the calf.
The jumbo calf, around 2 months old, came to Ganthigadia village in Angul in a cattle herd after being separated from its mother.
The villagers took were surprised to see the elephant calf. They rescued it and served with food and water after it showed weakness. With nursing the calf, they informed the forest department officials who rushed to the village and took the animal into its custody.
Usually, the elephant herd and mother elephant don’t take back one who got separated due to human smell.
