Sambalpur: An elephant calf that fell into a narrow bore well outside the Satapada village on Sunday was rescued after several hours of efforts by the Forest Department personnel on Monday morning. According to reports, a two-year-old elephant calf fell into the well last night when a herd was passing by Basiapada. The incident agitated the remaining members of the herd and they began harassing people in the neighboring villages.
On being informed, the Forest department started a rescue operation. All the while, other members of the elephant herd guarded the calf near the well. The Forest officials broke a part of the well with the help of a JCB to rescue the elephant calf and it slowly made its way out of the well.
Following the success of the rescue operation, all the elephants of the herd left for a nearby jungle.
