Berhampur: The carcass of an elephant was found in a water pit at Darapangia forest under the Mujagada Range in Ghumsur North Division in Ganjam district on Thursday. It is suspected the elephant was killed by poachers for its tusks.
The elephant is believed to have died more than two days ago. It was part of a herd of 20 elephants who are still present in the forest. Villagers who had gone to collect firewood in the forest discovered the carcass and informed forest officials.
As per the last reports, forest officials have recovered the carcass and initiated a probe into the matter. They are to conduct a post-mortem of the elephant to ascertain the reason behind its death.
