Elephant Gauri Becomes Fourth Victim Of Herpes At Nandankanan

Bhubaneswar: Sub-adult female tusker ‘Gauri’ succumbed to fatal Herpes virus at 9.51 pm on Friday at Nandankanan Zoological Park located on the outskirts of the Capital city.

The Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpes Virus (EEHV) has caused quite a scare for elephant calves at Nandankanan. With no known treatment for the disease, the ministrations only provided temporary relief to Gauri.

It is important to note here that Gauri was the fourth victim. Lone male elephant ‘Chandan’ had succumbed on September 15; whereas female elephant ‘Kamala’ had passed away Friday morning. On August 25 female elephant ‘Julie’ too had fallen victim to Herpes. Four elephants death in less than a month has put the zoo authorities in distress.

‘Gauri’ was rescued from Athagarh Forest Division at the age of two months in December 2012. Currently, Nandankanan Zoological Park houses three adult and one juvenile female elephants. Reportedly, the juvenile elephant is also sick and under treatment.
