Bhubaneswar: An elephant was killed after being hit by a goods train near the Meramundali forest section under the Dhenkanal division in the early hours of Saturday.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 2 am when a goods train collided with a herd of 40 elephants crossing the railway tracks. The accident took place merely 3 kilometres away from Meramundali railway station.
On a tip-off, Forest Department officials and Government Railway Police (GRP) rushed to the spot and recovered the elephant’s body.
Meanwhile, an investigation into the cause of the accident has been begun and the elephant’s body has been sent for post-mortem.
The forest department has initiated an inquiry into the incident.
