Bhubaneswar: A female elephant was killed after being hit by a freight train near Rourkela (Bisra) in between Jaraikela and Manoharpur on the Odisha-Jharkhand border.
Locals had staged a rail-roko over the killing of the pachyderm.
According to reports, the accident took place around 9 PM in the evening on Wednesday.
Following the accident, locals had staged a rail roko, halting movement of trains on the route for about three hours.
Fearing attack by agitated locals, the driver and guard of the freight train had fled the spot following the accident.
However, movement of trains on the route resumed after railway officials reached the spot and persuaded the locals to vacate their agitation.
The Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Saranda forest division reached the spot, seized the carcass of the wild animal and has initiated an inquiry into the incident, the reports added.
The accident occurred at a little distance from the jurisdiction of Rourkela Forest Division.
