Khurda: Two persons were killed in an elephant reportedly at Jaritapur in Khurdha’s Tangi block in Odisha late on Sunday night.
The deceased have been identified as Krushna Chandra Pradhan and Laxmidhar Behera.
According to reports, the deceased had gone to their farmland to keep a watch on their crops which are ready to be harvested. Suddenly, they noticed and elephant destroying their crops and tried to drive the animal away. However, the angry elephant chased the two and trampled them to death.
A pal of gloom descended on the village as the news of their death spread. Angered over the elephant attack and death of two persons, the villagers demanded adequate compensation to the families of the deceased.
The villagers also demanded the Forest department initiate measures to prevent the wild elephants from invading the village and destroy their crops.
Meanwhile, Forest Department personnel have launched an investigation into the matter.
