Cuttack: An elderly man was trampled to death by an elephant near Katikata under Nischintakoili police limits in the Cuttack district today.
The deceased elderly man has been identified as Bhagabata Behera of Ramaranga village.
“An elderly man Bhagabata Behera aged over 80 years of Ramaranga village in Katikata panchayat was crushed to death by an elephant in the backyard of his house while he was working in his garden,” said Manoranjan Bhuyan, a local.
Bhuyan said that the elephant which has strayed into Nischintakoili block area for about 4-5 days has damaged paddy crops in 100-200 hectares of farmland.
“We demand compensation for Bhagabat’s family and for the crops damaged by the pachyderm,” Bhuyan added.
Reportedly, the elephant which was in the Derabish area of Kendrapada district strayed into Ramaranga village while Forest department officials were trying to drive it back into the forested area.
As per the latest reports, Forest officials of Kendrapada and Cuttack are trying to drive the animal back into the forest.
