Mayurbhanj: In yet another instance of man-animal conflict, an old man was killed in an elephant attack in the Rasgobindpur range of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Friday morning.
According to reports, Adhar Patra (75) of Bechujhal village under Niagaram police limits in West Bengal had come to his daughter-in-law’s house in Sarumula village under Rasgobindpur block at around 4:30 am on Friday. When he ventured out of the house this morning, an elephant trampled him under its feet resulting in Adhar’s death on the spot.
On being informed, Forest department staff from Rasgobindpur range reached the spot, seized Adhar’s body, and sent it to PRM Medical College and Hospital in Baripada for autopsy.
Purnima Patra, daughter of Adhar, said that her father was ill and had come to her place for treatment. Unfortunately, he lost his life in an elephant attack.
Local villagers have expressed their anger over rising elephant attacks in the region. They also said that elephants were invading villages to escape the onslaught of poachers. The Forest department officials had failed to prevent elephant poaching in the district.
