Dhenkanal: Three persons were killed after being attacked by a rogue elephant at Bagha Dharia village under Hindol police limits in Dhenkanal district on Thursday morning.
The deceased were identified as Jhulan Dehuri (55), Karunakara Dehuri (60), and Shashi Sahu.
According to reports, Jhulan was collecting flowers when the elephant attacked him. Karunakara rushed to the scene after listening to her screams and was also attacked by the elephant. Both Jhulan and Karunakara died on the spot.
Later, Shashi Sahu encountered the same elephant and was severely injured after being attacked by the wild elephant. He was taken to Angul District Headquarters Hospital, where he was declared dead.
The incident has sparked outrage among villagers, who blocked the Puruna Cuttack-Sambalpur Road, demanding compensation and construction of a solar fence to protect them from elephant attacks as part of measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Officials, including Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Satya Kumar Nanda, IIC Charulata Behera, and Forest Ranger Goutam Pradhan, have reached the spot and are trying to pacify the agitated villagers till the last report came in.
