Bhubaneswar: Khandagiri police have arrested two youths including a Diploma Engineer on charges of peddling brown sugar.
A total of 20.29 gm of brown sugar and Rs 3,200 in cash have been seized from their possession, police said.
According to the police, the accused persons have been identified as Pritam Kumar Sahu alias Babu and Santosh Kumar Swain alias Tulu. Both hail from Baramunda area of the city.
“One of the accused Pritam Kumar Sahu alias Babu is a Diploma holder in Engineering and works at the Directorate of Ground Water at Delta Square as a Project Coordinator as an outsourced employee on contractual basis. The other accused is Santosh Kumar Swain alias Tulu. He runs a fast food joint near Nilakantheswar temple,” informed ACP Pradeep Kumar Rout, Sub Division III speaking to reporters.
Rout pointed out that Sahu draws a salary of Rs 40,000 to Rs 45,000 and has confessed to have fallen into the lure of earning an extra buck.
He said the other accused Swain has confessed to be doing it as a side business.
The ACP revealed that Khandagiri IIC received reliable information early in the morning on Friday that some quantity of brown sugar from Balasore was on its way to Bhubaneswar for sale via Baramunda and Khandagiri.
“Acting on the tip-off Khandagiri IIC formed a special team which was sent to Ramamani petrol pump. At around 10.00 AM the two youths Pritam and Santosh were nabbed. Upon searching their person we seized 11.09 gm brown sugar and Rs 1500 in cash from Pritam’s possession while 9.20 gm brown sugar and Rs 1700 in cash was seized from Santosh’ possession,” ACP Rout stated.
