Bhubaneswar: The Coronavirus is spreading at a lightning speed and has claimed around 34,000 precious lives across the world till March end. It has brought the whole world to stand still, with many countries resorting to lockdown.
In India, as many Indians are coming to terms with the unprecedented and sudden lockdown, waiting for the day when it will all end, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the US has increased to 142,502, the highest in terms of infections globally, according to the latest tally on 30th March from Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE). Moreover, White House has said that in a worst-case scenario, around 2,00,000 Americans could die from Covid-19.
In such times, OMMCOM NEWS brings you the lockdown experience of Odia Vice Chancellor Dr. Prasant Mohapatra residing in California with his family. He is serving as the Vice Chancellor for Research at University of California, Davis.
Starting his dialogue with a customary Namaskar, he explains the situation at his home.
“We are in the second week of the lockdown. And the entire family is indoors spending time with each other. I am doing all my University work through Zoom, teleconferencing, etc. My wife, who works for the State of California, is also working from home. My son, who is an employee of Microsoft, Seattle is also at home now following the ‘work from home’ norms. My daughter, who is an engineering student in Berkeley is continuing her course online from home now. Even the exams are conducted online.”
Dr Mohapatra specifically mentions about not moving out until absolutely necessary. “Seeing the scenario worldwide, it is advisable not to socialise in the present situation. We are moving out of the house only to get groceries and medicines. Short walks also can be taken but social distancing is strictly maintained around 6 feet distance,” he said.
As the Americans are preparing for another month’s lockdown, he explains, “ It is true that our lifestyle has entirely changed and the lockdown is to continue for around 4 weeks more. Though it is quite difficult to remain indoors all the time, but it is the best thing a person can do pertaining to the seriousness of the coronavirus.”
Talking about the situation in America, “The casualties of US are now China decreased its number of infections only by complete isolation whereas Italy started quarantining very late which is the only reason for its high number of positive cases and deaths. USA is in between Italy and China. Due to its size and population, USA has also been affected a lot. It has taken the virus very seriously now and we can hope that situation will improve in the coming days.”
Praising the Indian Government to have acted quite fast in such desperate time, he said, “India took the step quite early and announced a complete lockdown. It is good as social distancing is only the way out of this deadly disease. Once the numbers start increasing, it keeps on the growth at an exponential rate. The control will be very difficult. So the safest way is to follow strongly the concept of social distancing and avoiding social places. The step of the Indian government should be appreciated and my request is to follow the rules and regulations set by the government. The consequences will soon follow for everyone to see.”
He also shared a video of a road empty near an elementary school in California.
Globally, around 723,304 people are infected globally and around 33,993 are dead as per the reports on 30th March. Experts say the virus is at the early stages of its journey in India. While the country took sweeping measures fairly early, high population density, risk of mass exodus, congested living, callous attitude of some people, big joint families and inadequate medical facilities are risk factors.
