Bhubaneswar: The explosion at an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit that claimed five lives and critically injured three others at Bhusandapur village in Odisha’s Khurda district on Monday has served as a wake-up call for the authorities.
In the wake of the explosion, the police arrested seven persons while the district administration banned all firecracker shows in Khurda. Taking up the matter seriously, the District Collector convened a meeting of all top officials of Khurda, including the IICs of all police stations, at his office on Tuesday to review the situation and find ways and means to curb the menace of illegal firecracker manufacture and display in the district.
Following the meeting, Khurda District Collector K Sudarshan Chakraborty told the media that the firecrackers being made in Bhusandapur village for the Holi celebrations were being done without permission. He further said that they have launched an investigation to find where they obtained the materials for the firecrackers.
